In this post we lay out which software components you need when you’re editing, uploading, or looking at a website. You can download most of the programs you need for web development for free. We’ll provide a few links in this specific article. Nearly all os’s by default add a text editor and a web browser, used to see websites. As a total result, you usually only need to acquire software for transferring data files to your web server.

When your website is ready for general public viewing, you need to upload your webpages to your web server. You can buy space on the server from various providers (observe how much would it cost to do something on the web?). Once you settle on which supplier to use, the company shall email you the access information, in the form of an SFTP Link usually, username, security password, and other information needed to hook up to their server. Be aware that (S)FTP is currently relatively old-fashioned, and other uploading systems are beginning to recognition, such as RSync and Git/GitHub.

Note: FTP is inherently insecure. You should make sure your hosting company allows use of a secure connection, e.g. RSync or SFTP over SSH. Uploading files to an internet server is a very important step while making a website, so that it is covered by us at length in a separate article. As you know already, a web is necessary by you browser to view websites. If you are targeting a particular group (e.g., technical country or platform, it’s likely you have to test the website with additional web browsers, like Opera, Konqueror, or UC Browser. But screening gets complicated because some web browsers only operate on certain operating systems.

Apple Safari operates on iOS and Mac OS, while Internet Explorer runs only on Windows. It’s best to take benefit of services like Browsershots or Browserstack. Browsershots furnishes screenshots of your website as it shall look in a variety of web browsers. Browserstack actually gives you full remote access to virtual machines so you can test thoroughly your site in the most common environments.

Alternatively, you can create your own virtual machine, but that takes some expertise. By some tests are run you should on a real device, especially on real cellular devices.
